So, this year I started putting in motion a change for me. I rented out my house in September, I bought a 5th wheel in October and have been practicing living that lifestyle, and I bought a truck to pull it in December. I’ve been telling my kids for the last couple years but I don’t think they believed I would actually follow through with it. For now this is my 3-5 year plan, so that I can travel and see my kids since they are all spreading out. This will give me an opportunity to travel, explore, meet new people, and drop in on my kids’ lives occasionally.
Of course, this is truly a step out of my comfort zone as I have never hooked up a fifth wheel or trailed anything so big, YET. I’ve started by taking baby steps: living in a 32′ 5th wheel and learning to drive and park a big truck (was spoiled driving a small minivan for many years). This summer I’ll take the next step with small trips near home base and learn how to actually travel and set up a campsite.
I have fond memories of camping as a child. My family camped every summer for 4 weeks @ San Mateo Memorial Park with good family friends. We had a small Class C camper, but the kids all slept in tents. My father loved to hike and we would venture out on many trails exploring the campground. I even remember once when he went off on his own and came back covered with poison oak. I’ll be careful and of course always remember ‘leaflets 3 let it be’!. These memories are surfacing as I write this on his birthday in which he would have turned 91 today.
So, Let the ADVENTURE BEGIN!!
